News from Thursday's meeting at Beverley where Frankie Dettori made a rare visit to the Westwood count with his only ride.
Frankie Dettori made a rare visit to Beverley for just one ride and it paid off as Afjaan made a triumphant return after a year's absence.
The ever-popular Italian, who had only two previous mounts without success at the East Yorkshire track in the last five seasons, had to get his mount to knuckle down to open his account in the Racing UK Anywhere Available Now Maiden Stakes.
Afjaan, sent off the 5-6 favourite, came to take his main market rival Pensax Boy over a furlong out, but the pace-setter stuck to his guns and refused to go down without a struggle.
However, the once-raced William Haggas-trained three-year-old, owned by Al Shaqab Racing, gained the upper hand close home to get the verdict by half a length.
Haggas' representative Ian Williams said: "He's been off for a year because he's been gelded, but he did that great as the runner-up was quite a tough horse. That was great, and it's job done.
"He might be put away now for the year, but I'm not sure - I'm sure Mr Haggas will have something in mind for him."
Column was another short-priced favourite to strike on the back of a promising debut run.
The 10-11 shot trounced his rivals in the ebfstallions.com/beverley Annual Badgeholders Maiden Stakes after shaping encouragingly at Leicester.
Freddie Tylicki brought the James Fanshawe-trained youngster home eight lengths clear after leading two out.
"He ran well at Leicester on his debut but he's improved a lot from that," said Tylicki.
"He was absolutely loving the ground out there and I was always in command. He's a very nice horse who is obviously going the right way."
Deodoro (7-1) made light of the opposition as she made all the running in the EBF Stallions/Pony Racing Here On Sunday Maiden Stakes.
Stepping up on her debut fourth on this course last week, Mark Johnston's filly was much wiser as she swept to victory by an eased-down two and a half lengths.
Johnston's wife, Deirdre, said: "She's got a great attitude. She was green first time out here and had a bit of time off during the summer, so she's clearly learnt a lot.
"She's a big, scopey horse and is very straightforward."
Night Generation (1-2 favourite) backed up victories at Carlisle and Lingfield to complete a hat-trick in the Hold Your Christmas Party Here Handicap.
Jockey Paul Mulrennan was in double-winning form with narrow victories on Cabal and Venutius.
Geoff Harker's Cabal (9-2 joint-favourite) took the Eppleworth Fillies' Handicap by a short head from dead-heaters Make On Madam and Starlight Symphony.
The latter's jockey John Fahy was banned for two days (October 19 and 20) for using his whip above the permitted level.
Apprentice Joe Doyle was suspended for one day (October 15) for careless riding on fifth-placed Mystical Moment.
Mulrennan replaced Dale Swift on the Ed McMahon-trained Venutius (9-2), who gamely held off Kylach Me If U Can by the same margin in the Racing UK Day Pass Just £10 Handicap.
Fujin (11-2) just lasted home by a head from Poppy In The Wind in division one of the Brian And Jason Merrington Memorial Handicap.
