Rachel Richardson wins Betdaq Haydock Apprentice Training series champion title

Rachel Richardson claimed the Betdaq Haydock Apprentice Training series champion title on Friday September 25

Her closet rival and last year's champion, Jack Garritty was without a ride in the race leaving her 8 points clear of Edward Greatrex who was third in the points table.

During the series riders receive points for walking the course, riding skills, presentation and professionalism.

Richardson said "The Racing Excellences series' are great, the coaches on the day are so helpful and give you loads of advice.

"I think the points system is a good incentive to turn up to the races looking smart, making sure your on time for the course walk and acting professional at all times."

Richardson, apprentice to Michael Appleby has had her best season so far with 24 winners on the board which brings her career total to 37.

Coach Tom O'Ryan described Rachel as "a real horsewomen who works very hard".

As part of the Jockey Coaching Programme Richardson is entitled to four hours coaching a month, this can cover anything from simulator training, fitness, race reviews and nutrition.

When asked about the coaching she said: "It makes a huge difference having that support there throughout your time as an Apprentice.

"In all the sports around the world sportsmen and women have coaches even the athletes at the top still have coaches, why should race riding be any different? You can never stop improving.

"Tom has been great in all aspects of my riding career so far not just on the simulators or in the gym but being able to ring him before and after a race to talk about what I did well but more importantly where I can improve; it's a huge help."

For winning the series Rachel received £1000 which she intends to spend on an IPad and racing equipment.

The final race of the series was won by Charlie Bennett, apprentice to Hughie Morrison. Charlie is coached by John Reid and rode Omotesando for Mark Brisbourne.
