Don Cossack could reappear in the Star Best For Racing Coverage Chase at Punchestown next week.

A revelation last season, the Gordon Elliott-trained eight-year-old improved to the tune of 20lb according to the handicappers and is the general second-favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup behind Vautour.

He began in the same race 12 months ago before winning the John Durkan, the Melling Chase at Aintree and the Punchestown Gold Cup.

His only defeat came in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham, but before the Festival this year Elliott hopes he can run in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day.

Writing on his boylesports.com blog, Elliott said: "We had a great season with Don Cossack last year, when he finished up in the Punchestown Gold Cup, having started off in Grade Three at Punchestown.

"He'll start off next week or the week after in Punchestown in that grade of race again. He's summered great, looks great and we're very happy with him.

"We'll start him off in Punchestown and, all being well from there, we'll go to something like the King George."
