Tom Scudamore hopes to return to competitive action on Thursday, according to the jockey's boss, David Pipe.
Scudamore will attempt to prove his fitness in time for the three-day Open fixture at Cheltenham, where he could ride leading fancy Kings Palace in the Paddy Power Gold Cup on Saturday.
The rider has been sidelined with a knee injury since he fell at Huntingon on October 13, but Pipe said his retained jockey is close to a return.
The Pond House handler told his website, www.davidpipe.com: "Stable jockey Tom Scudamore is facing a well-publicised race against time to be back in the saddle ahead of the Open meeting following a tumble at Huntingdon last month but I am pleased to report an upbeat bulletin of his progress as he seems to be making a good recovery.
"Tom has been riding out for the last couple of mornings and is gradually doing more each day, including sessions on our mechanical horse, workouts in the gym and swimming pool, and he looks to be in fine shape.
"He will be doing some schooling later in the week, including aboard ante-post Paddy Power favourite Kings Palace.
"We will see how that goes before deciding on his (Kings Palace's) participation for Saturday's big race after that.
"Of course, Tom still has to pass the doctor before he is allowed to race ride again, although he is hopeful of being back to ride at Taunton or Ludlow on Thursday.
"I am sure a look at the entries for the weekend will be more than adequate incentive for him!"
