Sunshine Corner dazzles at Lingfield for Lucy Wadham

Lucy Wadham could have a smart prospect on her hands in the shape of Sunshine Corner, who never came out of second gear in winning the Happy 2nd Birthday Jenson Roe Mares' Novices' Hurdle at Lingfield.

Winner of a bumper on her racecourse debut, some idea of the regard in which she was held was evident in the fact Wadham subsequently raced her in Listed company.

While she cut no ice at Aintree, nor at Cheltenham earlier this month, she looked a natural on her first try over hurdles, despite the testing conditions.

Leighton Aspell kept her wide throughout but she jumped with aplomb and barely came off the bridle in beating even-money favourite Mozo by two and a quarter lengths.

"I was delighted with her, obviously," Wadham said of the 5-4 favourite.

"It wasn't a great race, but the second had won a bumper.

"She jumped beautifully and handled the ground, which I was a little worried about.

"We had a bit of a blip with her at Cheltenham but she had bad blood a few weeks before and maybe that left a mark.

"The drop in class has helped and hopefully she can build on that.

"There are so many options for mares now I think we'll probably try and win with a penalty.

"But there is a Listed race at Haydock later this month and if it came up bottomless, like it usually does, then we could be tempted by that.

"If not, we'll try to win with a penalty before going back up in class with her."
