John Gosden's exciting colt Shalaa will miss Royal Ascot after picking up a pelvic injury.

One of the star juveniles last season, he rounded off his campaign with victory in the Middle Park Stakes.

He was being prepared for the Commonwealth Cup at the Royal meeting but plans are now on hold.

Harry Herbert, racing manager for owners Al Shaqab Racing, said: "It's annoying and frustrating but he's got a little pelvic injury. He'll miss the first part of the season and we'll be taking all veterinary advice to try to get him back.

"It couldn't have come at a worse time and he's never had a thing wrong with him before. He'd been looking marvellous, he really has blossomed over the winter and exploded physically.

"It's inexplicable and just one of those things, but we hope to get him back for the second half (of the year). He won't be rushed, though, he'll be given all the time he needs."
