Racegoers caught up in brawl at Haydock Park

Haydock Park

Haydock Park officials are working with the police to investigate a brawl which broke out among spectators on Saturday.

The skirmish occurred just as the final of eight races got under way, with two groups of men seen throwing punches in among the general crowd, which included women and children.

After the initial disagreement seemed to have passed, it then broke out again before security staff intervened.

Around 40 people were involved in small pockets of trouble before the incident was closed down by stewards.

"We take a zero tolerance position on antisocial behaviour," a Haydock Park spokesman said.

"The perpetrators were ejected at the time and we are continuing to work with the police on this matter."

Merseyside Police said one man had been arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of a controlled drug following the brawl at Haydock.

The force also asked anyone with information about the incident to contact police.

The issue of violence at racecourses made headlines last May when fights between spectators took place at Goodwood and Ascot on successive weekends, with tracks subsequently implementing stricter security measures.
