Gubby gelding wins well

Son Of The Cat landed the opening bluesquare.com Stewards' Sprint Handicap at Glorious Goodwood on Saturday. The consolation race for the day's feature went to the Brian Gubby-trained five-year-old who was drawn in stall three on the far side and made best use of the fresh strip of ground. Franny Norton drove the 18-1 chance home by a length and three quarters from Confessional (14-1) with Valery Borzov (20-1) third. Joseph Henry (20-1) did the best of the near side runners and finished fourth. The well-fancied Saucy Brown finished fifth.

Winning trainer Brian Gubby said: "We were drawn three and it was felt that was the place to be. He won here as a two-year-old and is a genuine horse who deserved to win a good prize. "We'd been heading for the Stewards' Cup but to win this consolation prize is great. I'm over the moon." Gubby has just four horses now, but proclaimed Goodwood a lucky course for him, adding: "This fellow is rated 91 which is an awkward mark. "I put him in a Listed race at Windsor last time and he wasn't beaten that far by Bated Breath in a race where they broke the track record."
