Progressive six year old defies penalty to record game success

Tangerine Trees made all to land the Listed totepool Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes. Bryan Smart's gelding had maintained his end of term progress when reappearing in April but had subsequently finished down the field in a Group Two and a Group One. Carrying a 7lb penalty for his Group Three win, he set out to make all with the field shunning the far side of the track following heavy rain on the Westwood. The six year old was strongly challenged in the closing stages by the prominent racing Duchess Dora and three year old Dinkum Diamond who emerged from the pack. However, he stuck his neck out to score by a neck and a neck to record a game success. "That was some performance. I'm really delighted. My worry was the 7lb penalty because he had to run to 112 to beat them and he did," said Smart. "We've had a few niggly problems with him, but we've ironed them out now. "I must give credit to Tom (Eaves). He was determined to get that rail early on. I know they've moved off it because when they've got to the crowd the horse has seen the brollies and didn't want to go near them. "That was a right performance and our 60th winner of the year. Things are going grand. "He's in the Abbaye. I'll talk to the owner but we might as well place him in that. We'll keep him fresh for that."
