The Superior Mile at Haydock on Saturday week is a potential next port of call for Short Squeeze following his dramatic last-gasp victory at York.

Hugo Palmer's four-year-old looked destined for big things after rattling off a hat-trick between July and September of last season, but it has taken a while for him to find the number one spot this term.

He was given a brilliantly executed ride from Pat Smullen to get up on the line in a lucrative handicap on the Knavesmire last week and Palmer feels it will have done his gelding's confidence plenty of good.

Palmer said: "As I said in the lead-up to last week I'd been scratching my head as to why he'd not been winning races, so it was nice everything came together and we got it right on the day.

"He's come out of the race very well indeed and I think he knows he won.

"There is a mile Group Three race at Haydock a week on Saturday (Superior Mile), so we'll look at that and see how the horse is nearer the time."

Palmer was only narrowly denied a double at York on Thursday as New Providence ran a fantastic race to finish second in the DBS Premier Yearling Stakes, picking up £50,000.

"She ran a huge race and it was just a shame she did her racing on the wrong part of the track," said Palmer.

"It would have been nice to race against the winner. I'm not saying we would have beaten him, but I think she would have asked him a question.

"Either way she ran a huge race and she picked up a fistful of cash, so we're delighted with her.

"All being well she'll head for the Dick Poole Stakes at Salisbury next."
