Harriet Graham praised James Reveley after the jockey got his fractions spot on from the front on Scotswell in the North Yorkshire Grand National at Catterick.
Graham, who also owns and bred the 5/1 favourite, was almost lost for words after the nine-year-old held off the late thrust of Herdsman by a neck.
As well as training a small string, Graham divides her time between being clerk of the course at both Perth and Musselburgh.
Bounced out in front, Reveley got his mount into a great rhythm and after finishing second in the Borders National last time out, he was determined to go one better.
A few looked to have stronger claims with half a mile to run, but Barton Gift slipped up on the level just before the home turn and Whats Up Woody was running on empty.
It was left to Herdsman, hard ridden a long way out, to throw down the challenge but the loose horse on the inside of Scotwell just perked him up for the final 100 yards and he narrowly held on with Whats Up Woody eight lengths away.,
"He's a funny horse because we just can't get to the bottom of him," said Graham.
"He's very one-paced but he just keeps on galloping which is why we have to ride him like we do. James is brilliant for him, there is nobody better at getting one jumping as well as he does.
"We'll have a look out for another long-distance race for him."
The news was not as positive for 'find of the season' Sean Bowen who was taken to hospital with a suspected shoulder injury after a fall from Milborough.
John Ferguson is enjoying a great season and Buckwheat became the latest high-profile recruit off the Flat to take to the winter game with an effortless win in the Watch 3 Devices On RacingUk.com/Anywhere Novices' Hurdle.
Rated over 100 when with Andre Fabre, he looked to have plenty on his plate taking on Donald McCain's Konig Dax, who had beaten Willie Mullins' Douvan when last seen in France.
However, that one was weak in the market and pulled up, as did Ellison's Zaidiyn, leaving Buckwheat to coast home under Tony McCoy in his own time, bar a blunder at the final flight.
With Ferguson in Dubai for the start of the Carnival, McCoy said: "He did it well apart from stepping at the last."
Former jockey Alex Merriam, now Ferguson's assistant, said: "This is a nice place too start off and he couldn't have done any more.
"It looked a nice race on paper but the other two have pulled up so you wouldn't be sure what he has beaten.
"He was decent on the Flat and this is the perfect start. He jumped well apart from the last."
Intense Tango followed up her good hurdling debut with a win in the racinguk.com Fillies' Juvenile Hurdle.
Sent off the 1/2 favourite having finished second in a Listed event at Aintree, Brian Hughes did not have to get overly serious after the last as she drew a length and a half clear of Jonjo O'Neill's Saint Lucy.
Trainer Karl Burke has some grand plans and said: "She hated the ground, Brian said she'd be even better still on some nice ground.
"That was a lovely school round and it was a case of 'job done'.
"There's a chance she could go to Doncaster at the end of this month for a Grade Two, it depends how that cuts up I suppose.
"We could miss Cheltenham and aim her at the Grade One at Aintree where with her allowance she could be very interesting.
"She'll only have one or two more runs before we send her back on the Flat."
Jockey Harry Haynes has struck up a nice relationship with Sue Smith since returning to the UK after a stint in the US and partnered Hainan to a surprise 25/1 success in the Bhest Racing To School Novices' Hurdle.
On just his second run for the yard, he looks a horse with a future.
Haynes said: "It was a little bit of a surprise but he's a lovely big horse. He was getting weight off them as a four-year-old and had bits and pieces of form in France. He'll make a lovely chaser."
Smith doubled up as Emral Silk was an easy winner of the yorkshire-outdoors.co.uk Adventure Activities Handicap Hurdle as the 3/1 favourite for Dougie Costello.
