A review of the action on a historic day of action at Wetherby, where Paul Mulrennan put the pedal to the metal.
Paul Mulrennan celebrated the first Flat meeting at Wetherby with a double on Mount Tahan and Corona Borealis.
Mulrennan cycled the 10 miles from his home to the West Yorkshire venue in a sweatsuit and then walked the track before racing in order to shift a crucial pound or two in weight.
His hard work was rewarded as he first drove Mount Tahan (3/1) to an all-the-way win in division two of the bet365 EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes.
The Kevin Ryan-trained gelding confirmed the promise of two runs as a juvenile with an emphatic four-and-a-half-length rout over Fly With Emirates.
Mulrennan said: "He was green and backward last year, but the penny has really dropped with him.
"The further he went there, the better he went. He's a nice horse and hopefully there will be more to come."
Mulrennan's brace came on Corona Borealis (7/1), formerly trained in Ireland by Johnny Murtagh, who lost his maiden tag on his British debut with a hard-fought success in the bet365 Handicap.
The Michael Dods-trained four-year-old collared the pace-setting Be Perfect in the final furlong to get the verdict by half a length.
"We got him in February and I said to Andrew (Tinkler, owner) this morning that if he's going to be any good, he needs to get this trip and further," said Dods.
"They've been running him over shorter and he hasn't got any gears. The plan was to sit handy but he stood still and missed the break."
Eric Alston's plan paid off as Ridge Ranger (16/1) romped away with the feature race on the card, the Cash Out At bet365 Fillies' Handicap.
The Preston trainer marked out this five-and-a-half furlong sprint for the lightly-raced filly and she duly asserted in the closing stages to score by a length and a half from the 6/5 favourite Secret Hint under Jason Hart.
"She only had the four runs last year and she won first time out," said Alston.
"She's strengthened up through the winter and I saw this race. It's great when it comes together. I was worried it might be to firm for her but Jason said it's good out there.
"This was the plan. I just hoped it would come off."
The 5,000-strong crowd was treated to a thriller in the opening bet375.com Handicap as In Focus (11/1), trained by Alan Swinbank and ridden by David Allan, edged out Rousayan by a nose.
Swinbank said: "He had a good draw (four) so he was able to let two or three give him a lead.
"It didn't surprise me as he's been working well with some nice horses."
Great Fun (16/1) made all the running in the hands of Jimmy Fortune for a winning debut in the bet365 EBF Stallion Farms Maiden Stakes (Division One).
Winning trainer, Manton-based Brian Meehan, said: "He's a nice horse. We've given him a lot of time, but he's grand now. Jimmy said we should stay at seven and he'll win more races.
"I like the place. They've treated us well. I haven't been here before - but I haven't had any need to!"
Ben Haslam's Lady Lekki (20/1), bred by jockey Kieren Fallon, showed a neat turn of foot when making a winning debut in the bet365 Maiden Auction Stakes under Andrew Elliott.
"She's shown a bit of quality, but it probably wasn't a great maiden," said Haslam.
"She had little issues as a two-year-old, but was on the go and she's done that well."
Fallon got on the score sheet in the saddle as well when he struck on Snappy Guest (3/1 favourite) in the Bingo At bet365 Handicap.
He brought the George Margarson-trained gelding to get the better of Hidden Rebel by two and a quarter lengths.
"We've a half-brother to Lady Lekki by Dylan Thomas and he's a smashing colt. I think the filly will win again. She didn't do an awful lot in front. Hopefully she'll go on," said Fallon.
"It was great to get one for George. I rode him (Snappy Guest) a couple of times last year and liked him.
"It's lovely here. It's one of the better northern tracks and pity they didn't have it before now, but it's great."
The Allan-partnered Poolstock, who finished third, switched placings with original fourth Mon Gris following a stewards' inquiry.
Allan completed a first-and-last race double when bringing the Geoff Harker-trained Moccasin (8/1) with a late charge to land the Casino At bet365 Handicap by one and a quarter lengths from Where's Tiger.
