Officials at Chelmsford City are eager to return to action next week after their upgraded track was given positive reviews following a gallops session on Wednesday.

Representatives of the British Horseracing Authority, National Trainers Federation and Martin Collins Enterprises, who produce the Polytrack surface, were on hand along with four senior jockeys - Jimmy Quinn, Luke Morris, John Egan and Liam Jones - as the track was tested.

The surface, which has been fully re-waxed to minimise kickback and increase energy return, was given the thumbs-up by all at the track and will be raced on for the first time next Tuesday.

Chelmsford's managing director Phil Siers said: "We're delighted with the feedback from all parties following this morning's gallops. We've invested a substantial amount but getting the surface right has always been our number one priority.

"The construction of the seven-furlong start chute is also well underway and we're all systems go for racing next Tuesday."

Racecourse manager Fraser Garrity added: "I met with several experienced trainers last month and stressed that we are absolutely committed to providing the best racing surface we can.

"I'm confident the re-wax has achieved this and hope they will support us still further at our upcoming fixtures."

Quinn enjoyed a spin around the revamped surface and he was more than satisfied with the track.

He said: "I thought it looked better straight away and after riding on it I'd say it's a big improvement. We're happy."
