St Leger hope Sumbal beaten at Deauville
Sunday 30 August 2015 16:50, UK
Sumbal's bid to stake a possible claim for the Ladbrokes St Leger or even the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe failed to get off the ground as he finished well beaten as Siljan's Saga landed the Grand Prix de Deauville.
Unbeaten before finishing a creditable fifth in the French Derby, the Francis Graffard-trained colt, owned by Qatar Racing and ridden by Andrea Atzeni, was prominent through the early stages of the extended mile and a half event as Cocktail Queen took the field along in a bid for back-to-back wins in the Group Two contest.
Sporting the colours of Jeff Smith carried to victory in the Juddmonte International by Arabian Queen, Cocktail Queen made a brave bid to hold on down the straight but Siljan's Saga had the better turn of foot in the final half-furlong to seize the day under Pierre-Charles Boudot.
The Andrew Balding-trained Scottish could not trouble the principals in fifth, while Sumbal folded rapidly in the home straight.
One visiting team were able to celebrate on the day though, as Frankie Dettori and John Gosden teamed up for another notable success as Johnny Barnes recorded a commanding victory in the Group Three Prix Quincey Barriere on the same card.
Below-par in his two starts in Britain this season, Johnny Barnes, a 4/1 chance, travelled strongly from halfway and cruised past his rivals in the testing conditions to win by a couple of lengths without having to be asked for maximum effort.
Spoil The Fun and Stillman dead-heated for second place.
