Connections of Alexios Komnenos were delighted with his performance in the Tyros Stakes at Leopardstown on Thursday.

Tommy Stack's Choisir colt was a surprise 50/1 winner on his debut but he proved that was no fluke when only just failing to reel in Royal Ascot winner Churchill.

He holds an entry in the Galileo European Breeders Fund Futurity Stakes at the end of August but no target has yet been set.

"We were delighted with him, obviously," said Fozzy Stack, the trainer's son and assistant.

"He stepped up from his maiden and was just held close home.

"What he has proved is that there was no fluke about his maiden win. Because he was a big price that day some might have doubted it, but it wasn't as if he won by a neck or anything.

"The winner was just more experienced, he'd been to Royal Ascot, and that showed close home.

"We've got the scope to improve, both physically and mentally.

"I don't know where he'll go next, we'll just see how he comes out of it.

"I wouldn't rule out stepping him up in trip, but I'm not saying he definitely will, we'll decide in a week or two."
