Officials at Sedgefield have called an 8am inspection for Friday's card, but remain optimistic of beating of weather.

Clerk of the course Sophie Barton reports it to be dry at present, but further rain is forecast.

Rain totalling 3mm had fallen by lunchtime on Thursday, and with further rain forecast on already heavy ground before clearing, clerk of the course Sophie Barton is keen to monitor conditions.

Speaking earlier on Thursday, Barton said: "It's taking it well at the moment.

"We were forecast heavy rain this morning but we only had a light drizzle at about 6.30am and it's been dry since."

It is a similarly upbeat picture at Wetherby, where racing is due to take place on Saturday.

Clerk of the course Jonjo Sanderson has no issues with the track and though heavy rain is forecast, it has yet to materialise.

He said: "We are expecting more rain today. We only had one millimetre overnight and the forecast yesterday was for 20mm today.

"We haven't seen that yet and I suppose it's just a case of whether this doomsday scenario appears.

"The ground is heavy, soft in places and the track is perfectly raceable at present."
