Oxx and Kinane team up for further Classic success

Alandi gave John Oxx and Michael Kinane another Classic success in the Irish Field St Leger on Saturday. The 3-1 chance gave the pair, who have teamed up so successfully with Sea The Stars this year, another Group One win as the legendary Yeats proved a disappointment. The writing was on the wall a long way from the finish for the legendary stayer, who has now been beaten three times in the race. Seamie Heffernan allowed the four-time Ascot Gold Cup hero to come home in his own time as Godolphin's Schiaparelli made a bold bid to make it a St Leger double for connections. However, the petrol ran dry in the closing stages and he was grabbed inside the final furlong by the winner, who held the late rally of Clowance to clinch victory. "Mick had fancied him for this race for a while - he always said to me if it was soft he would take some beating," Oxx said. "One mile, six furlongs is the bare minimum for him as he's a real grinder. "I was happy to see him come off the bridle as early as he did because Mick said afterwards they went a hell of a gallop on such soft ground. "We'll go for the Cadran next and he'll stay in training next year. "He's a fun horse - the only thing is he's not as good on good ground so a place like Ascot might not be for him." Of Yeats, Heffernan could only report: "He just wouldn't go today."
