Lebanon are in a strong position to contest their first World Cup since 2000 after gaining a 40-12 first leg win in their qualifying tie with hosts South Africa in Brakpan, near Pretoria.

In searing heat, the Cedars ran in seven tries, three by winger Travis Robinson, while half-back James Boustani kicked six goals.

"We've been training together for five weeks and I thought it came together really well," said Lebanon's man of the match Elias Sukkar.

"We played a tough opponent but we managed to get through them. Our structure was the difference and our defence was really good."

The second leg will be at the same venue next Friday, with the aggregate winners taking their place in the 2017 World Cup in Australasia.

South Africa coach Brian Greige said: "Our completion rate was really good but we made too many mistakes in key areas, especially in the first half.

"We have a few things to work on this week but we should be good for the experience and hopefully we'll turn it around."
