John Bateman has signed a new three-year deal with Wigan until the end of the 2018 season.

The new contract has the option of a fourth year, but also gives Bateman the option to move to the NRL from the 2019 season.

The news is a big boost for this year's losing finalists, as they secure the future of both their Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year.

"I'm really happy to have signed a new deal committing my future to Wigan," said Bateman.

"It was a big decision for me to come here when I did a couple of years ago but I have loved every second of it.

"Playing alongside established international forwards like Liam Farrell, Joel Tomkins and Sean O'Loughlin has helped develop my game."

The contract is the latest piece of good news for Bateman, who earlier this month celebrated his first call up to the England Squad against France and New Zealand in the Autumn International Series.

Head coach Shaun Wane said: "John has been fantastic since day one and he actually made his debut for Wigan in the World Club Challenge against Sydney Roosters.

"We were confident in putting him in that day and firmly believe that he belongs at the very highest level.

"We are delighted to have completed this contract extension. We're well on with building a team at Wigan that can compete at the very top for many years and players like John fit the mould perfectly."

The former Dudley Hill amateur made his professional debut in 2011 for Bradford Bulls aged just 17 before signing for Wigan last year.

Bateman made 31 appearances this season, including his second consecutive Grand Final appearance as Wigan narrowly lost 22-20 to Leeds.

"It quickly became clear that we had a future international player on our hands," said chairman Ian Lenagan.

"Whilst John does not currently envisage going to the NRL during this contract period, it allows him that option after three years and protects and rewards the Wigan club should John want to play in the NRL at that time."
