Former Warriors player takes over from Maguire
Wigan have confirmed that former player Shaun Wane will take over as the new head coach of the Warriors after the departure of Michael Maguire.
Wane, who was previously a full-time assistant to Maguire, has been appointed on a two-year contract with the option for a third season.
Maguire has opted to return home to Australia after two years in charge at Wigan to become head coach of South Sydney Rabbitohs.
"It means everything to be honest, I've dreamt about getting this role, I've been involved here for over 20 years and I've watched Wigan since I was six years old," Wane told
Sky Sports News.
"It's a great moment for me and my family and I'm going to make sure I give it my all. I'm looking forward to meeting with the players for pre-season in a few weeks' time."
He added: He added: "My relationship with Michael Maguire was absolutely fantastic and we have very similar thoughts on how the game should be played and we worked very well together.
Improvement
"But there is room for improvement and it's my job to make sure that we make that improvement in the next few years."
Former dual-code international Iestyn Harris, who stepped down as Crusaders boss after they dropped out of Super League, has been named as Wane's assistant.
"I've had many chats with Iestyn and he understands what his role is - he's here to make sure he supports me in everything I do," Wane said.
"He's come from Crusaders and at Wigan - no disrespect to Crusaders - but it's a bit of a step up and he's looking forward to learning as much as he can about the Wigan way."
Another former Great Britain international, Paul Deacon, was also added to Wigan's full-time backroom staff after announcing his retirement from playing.
