Castleford stand-off Rangi Chase has been presented with the Albert Goldthorpe Medal for 2011.

New Zealander 'best and fairest' Super League player

Castleford stand-off Rangi Chase has scooped the Albert Goldthorpe Medal for 2011. The half-back was presented with the award at Tuesday's ceremony, held at Huddersfield's Galpharm Stadium, with Giants winger Jermaine McGillvary receiving the rookie of the year honour. Chase held off the challenge of Wigan full-back Sam Tomkins, who was named the Rugby League Writers' Association player of the year earlier in the day, to take the prize. The New Zealander ended the season with 40 points from a possible 81, landing the prize for the 'best and fairest' player in the Super League. The Castleford player follows in the footsteps of previous recipients of the award, including Michael Dobson (Hull KR) and Danny Brough (Wakefield). Tomkins had to make do with second place having shared the award last season with Warriors team-mate Pat Richards. Martyn Sadler, managing editor of the Rugby League Express which organised the award, commented: "Rangi has been an inspiration for Castleford this season."
