Former Huddersfield and St Helens boss Nathan Brown has been confirmed as the new coach of Newcastle Knights.

Brown, 42, who cut short his stay with Saints after guiding them to Grand Final glory last October, has signed a three-year contract with the Knights.

He takes over from interim coach Danny Buderus, the former Leeds hooker who replaced Rick Stone in mid-season and will become part of Brown's backroom team.

Brown, who will relocate from Sydney to Newcastle with his family, believes his extensive experience as a head coach and his ability to bring the best out of developing players are some of the strengths he will bring to the role.

"I'd like to think it's my experience," said Brown. "I've worked at three different clubs and every club I've worked at I've introduced young players."

Brown began his coaching career at St George Illawarra in 2003 after playing 172 games for the club, and he moved to England in 2009.

He was Super League's coach of the year in 2009 after guiding Huddersfield to the Challenge Cup final and moved to St Helens in 2013.

Brown has spent this year working as a coaching consultant for Melbourne Storm.

Newcastle picked up the dreaded wooden spoon after last Saturday's loss at Penrith consigned them to the foot of the NRL table.
