Storm ace on his way to Craven Park
Hull KR have agreed a two-year deal with Melbourne back-rower Clint Newton, who will join the influx of NRL stars in next season's Super League.
The 26-year-old was forced out of Melbourne due to salary-cap restrictions, paving the way for the East Yorkshire club to step in.
The move completes a roller-coaster year for Newton, who started the season with Newcastle Knights before joining the Storm following a spat with Newcastle coach Brian Smith.
"I've had a great time at the Storm and I'll always be grateful they gave me the chance to continue playing in the NRL when I left Newcastle," Newton said.
"I can't speak highly enough of the club and if there's a chance of playing for them again in the future I'd definitely be interested."
Rovers' coach Justin Morgan said he was delighted to be signing such a high-quality player.
"I'm really excited to be signing a player of Clint Newton's calibre," he said. "He is a truly huge signing for the club, more so as he comes over to us as an NRL Grand Final winner.
"He is the ultimate professional and has been throughout the time we have been speaking with him.
"He is at the peak of his career and will bring a tremendous amount of experience, strength, commitment and quality to what is shaping up be a very exciting squad of players.
"I am looking forward to his arrival and to working with him."
Newton was released by Melbourne after fellow back-row Jeremy Smith opted to stay with the club despite a lucrative counter-offer from St George-Illawara.
