Tigers assistant sees positives in Chambers rugby league debut
Castleford assistant coach and former Great Britain international Andy Hay said Dwain Chambers showed some promise on his rugby league debut.
The Great Britain sprinter played 39 minutes in four spells during his bit-part role in Castleford's reserve game against York, and ended up with an injured shoulder.
Chamber struggled at times and was rarely involved directly in the action, but Tigers assistant coach Hay saw enough to suggest he could improve.
"I think a lot of Super League wingers would have been happy with some of the runs Dwain had," said Hay.
"He knocked a few defenders off and showed some pace and then made a real quick play-the-ball."
Hard work
"He's got a long way to go but he's worked hard so far and, with the determination he's got, who knows what could happen?
"His game awareness is a little bit lacking and that comes with training. He's working very hard at it and everything we've thrown at him, he's done.
"He's not enjoyed everything, I wouldn't have thought, but he's got up off the floor and gone again. His attitude will take him forward."
Castleford head coach Terry Matterson returned early from France to watch Chambers in action, and the athlete insisted he would be back for more despite a difficult debut.
A difficult late spell at full-back ruled out that position for Chambers, but he said that he is keen to play again and try to improve on his first performance.
Buzz
"Full-back's not the position for me," Chambers said. "In terms of doing what I had to do for the team, I was prepared to do that.
"That bit at the end was the worst. But I was able to get up and fight it off.
"I'm still smiling and feeling the buzz from today's event and looking forward to the next time.
"As the game went on, I got more stuck in and there were a few tackles that left my head spinning. It's a tough, physical sport.
"I'm sure going to be feeling the effects tomorrow but I'm still standing."
Chambers is keen to secure a contract at the Jungle but the club will be keen to see him in action again before taking a chance.
