Third coach loses his job in Super League this year
Huddersfield Giants have announced that they have terminated the contract of coach Jon Sharp with immediate effect.
The former St Helens assistant took over at the Galpharm Stadium in 2003 when Tony Smith left for Leeds Rhinos.
During his five years in charge the Giants have reached the final of the Challenge Cup and also last year appeared in the play-offs for the first time.
However, they have struggled for consistency in 2008 and are currently 10th in Super League with nine points from 15 games. Their most recent outing saw them beaten 48-0 by Catalans Dragons in Perpignan.
Assistants Paul Anderson and Kieron Purtill have been put in temporary charge as the club search for a permanent replacement.
Major disappointment
"Under Jon Sharp the Giants reached the Challenge Cup Final two years ago and last year after losing their first seven matches achieved a top six finish," said chairman Ken Davy.
"Unfortunately our results and performances this year have proved a major disappointment for everyone including Jon.
"The process of appointing a new coach will begin shortly and in the meantime Paul Anderson and Kieron Purtill will take temporary charge of the Huddersfield Giants squad."
Sharp had become the longest serving coach in Super League last week following Paul Cullen's exit from Warrington.
Australian Peter Sharp was the first man to lose his job in the top flight this season when he parted company with Hull FC on May 19.
