Warrington hooker Mark Gleeson has joined Halifax and not their National League One rivals Featherstone.
Hooker insists he had no agreement with Rovers over deal
Mark Gleeson has left Warrington Wolves to join Halifax, despite reports he had originally signed for National League One club Featherstone.
Gleeson, 26, was released from the final three months of his contract at the Halliwell Jones Stadium having failed to reach terms for a renewal.
The hooker, who is the younger brother of Warrington and Great Britain centre Martin Gleeson, joined the Wolves in 1999 from Ince St Williams amateur club.
Apart from a brief spell in Australia in 2002, he spent nine years at the club, making 153 appearances, all but 45 of them as a substitute.
Contribution
"Warrington Wolves would like to thank Mark for his contribution to the club and wish him well in his future," read a club statement.
It was thought that Gleeson had joined Featherstone, only for the club to then issue a statement claiming the player and his agent had reneged on an agreement to sign a short-term deal until the end of the season.
Fax of life
Gleeson replied by stating he had made no commitment to Rovers, instead joining their league rivals Halifax for the rest of the campaign.
"We were made aware that Mark was available earlier today and moved quickly to make him an offer," said Halifax chief executive Graham Clay.
"Contrary to earlier reports, Mark hadn't agreed a deal with Featherstone but has now signed with us for the rest of the season.
"We weren't looking to make any more signings but, when an established quality Super League player becomes available, it's too good an opportunity to miss."
