Wigan’s Matty Smith has been banned for one match for kicking Widnes Vikings’ Rhys Hanbury in the opening match of Super League season.

Smith will miss Wigan's home match against Huddersfield on Friday after being charged with kicking an opponent.

The former St Helens player, who missed only two matches last season, was charged by the Rugby Football League's match-review panel with a grade B offence, which carries a ban of one to two games.

With no previous offence in the last 12 months, Smith was able to submit an early-guilty ensuring he is able to return for the World Club series match against Brisbane Broncos on February 21.

James Child sin-binned the 27-year-old for kicking out at Widnes full-back Hanbury after substitute Chris Dean had scored a late Vikings' try that enabled his side to snatch a 22-22 draw.

The panel also issued a formal caution to Wigan centre or second rower Joel Tomkins for "contrary behaviour" after he became involved in the same melee.

Widnes winger Patrick Ah Van, who was sent off in the first half of that game for a high tackle on Wigan winger Josh Charnley, has been charged with a grade B offence and has until 11am on Tuesday to submit an early-guilty plea and accept a one-match ban.

Salford second rower Weller Hauraki will appear in front of a disciplinary committee on Tuesday after being charged with a grade B offence of making dangerous contact on Warrington forward Ben Currie during the Red Devils' 22-8 defeat by the Wolves on Saturday.
