Having knocked out reigning champion Darren Morgan in the previous round, Bond recorded a 2-0 triumph over outsider Chappel in the best-of-three frame final to pick up a cheque for £18,000.

The 46-year-old from Derbyshire took a tight opener on the black, cutting it into the right corner pocket before watching on as the white remained safely on the table, before easing to victory in the next by a 66-4 scoreline.

Bond had also beaten Tony Knowles 2-0 in the quarter-finals in the afternoon, meaning he went through the entire event without dropping a frame.

"It's a great feeling," he told Sky Sports after picking up the trophy. "It's been a great weekend and all the players have enjoyed it, especially me!

"I played a bit scrappy yesterday (Saturday) and only felt I really got going in the second frame against Tony. I felt then I had a nice rhythm."

Chappel fell at the final hurdle after a surprising run in the tournament, including beating Alain Robidoux and Dene O'Kane on Sunday.

"I got further than I certainly expected," admitted the Welshman who had to come through qualifiers to make the main field.

"The better man definitely won. Nigel's a tour player - he played like one, he looked like one."
