Johanna Konta continued her fine run of form with a 6-4 7-5 win over 13th seed Andrea Petkovic in the first round of the Wuhan Open in China.
Konta made it 19 wins from her last 20 matches since being beaten by Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon with a second victory over Petkovic, who is ranked 17th in the world.
The British No 2 also beat Germany's Petkovic earlier this month at the US Open, where she made it to the last 16 before being beaten by fifth seed Petra Kvitova.
Konta, who is ranked 63rd in the world, will next meet former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka, who beat America's Lauren Davis 6-2 7-6 in their first round encounter.
She said: "When you're playing against players of that calibre it's a given that it's always going to be a tough fight.
"I just feel very fortunate that I got to play such a good match against her. It wasn't easy out there. It was very tough conditions; it was very hot."
British No 1 Heather Watson is also in action in Wuhan but faces a tough test in her first match, taking on Jelena Jankovic who is unseeded despite coming into the tournament on the back of winning the Guangzhou International.
Like Konta, Watson had to come through two rounds of qualifying to make it into the main draw, beating Jarmila Gajdosova and Yulia Putintseva in straight sets.
