Nadal, currently fifth in the ATP world rankings, won the inaugural Rio Open two years ago but must get past his compatriot David Ferrer, the world No 6, who returns as the defending champion.

Ferrer defeated Fabio Fognini in last year's final and the enigmatic Italian joins the line-up to seek revenge.

The Rio Open is a clay court tournament played at the Jockey Club, a stone's throw from the stunning Copacabana Beach.
