Alexander Zverev has been sent packing from the Rogers Cup at the first hurdle at the hands of Lu Yen-Hsun.

The Taiwanese player caused a significant upset in Toronto with a 7-5 6-3 win over one of the sport's brightest, young talents.

The 19-year-old Zverev had no answer to the world No 70 and was dumped out of the competition within an hour and 32 minutes. Germany's Zverev managed to keep just 54 per cent of his first serves in during a frustrating outing.

Lu will next take on Canadian fourth seed and Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic, the 2013 finalist who lost his opening match at home a year ago.

"If a 10,000 crowd is against you, even if you prepare for it, it's still a shock," said Lu. "I'll be a little bit nervous, I hope I can play my best tennis and try to enjoy the 10,000 people against me!"
