Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet were among the first-round winners at the Cincinnati Masters as rain halted play for large parts of the day.
Several of the competitors from Rio 2016 made their entries to the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday, with Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal due to start their bids on Wednesday after a draining Olympics competition.
But of those who did manage to play and get their matches completed, there was victory for the highest seed in the early action of the day.
Monfils is seeded ninth in Ohio and eased through with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta, while there was victory for another Frenchman with Gasquet also successful.
The world number 15 is a potential last-16 opponent for Murray and was made to battle in his clash with fellow countryman Adrian Mannarino.
Gasquet came through a tie-break to claim the first set before Mannarino rallied to take the second, but it was Gasquet who went on to claim the match and a second-round meeting with Kevin Anderson after losing just one more game.
11th seed David Goffin wasted little time in seeing off Georgia's Nicoloz Basilashvili 7-5, 6-3 while Mikhail Youzhny ended the challenge of rising America star Taylor Fritz with a comprehensive 6-1 6-3 win that sees him through to face Olympic bronze medalist Kei Nishikori.
Australian pair Bernard Tomic and John Millman were also victorious before the rain came.
