Nick Kyrgios says he is fit, confident and ready to play for Australia in this week's Davis Cup clash with Slovakia.

The 21-year-old chose not to compete at the Rio Olympics and was forced to retire from his third round match at the recent US Open due to a hip injury.

However, the world No 15 trained with the team ahead of this weekend's World Group play-off match in Sydney and he told reporters: "I wouldn't be here if I didn't want to play.

"I feel ready and I'm playing probably the best tennis I have.

It's feeling good and I'm feeling confident about the injury.

"I've hit twice since I've been here and been going for about an hour, to an hour and a half, so it's feeling good and I'm feeling confident about the injury."

If deemed fit by Australia's skipper Lleyton Hewitt, Kyrgios will team-up with Bernard Tomic who also opted not to take part in the Olympics.

The duo had a minor feud earlier this year when Tomic questioned Kyrgios for pulling out of their World Group tie against the United States in Melbourne because of illness.

Kyrgios said of Tomic, the world No 21, on Tuesday: "He's a great player, with great potential and doing great things."

Victory for Australia this week would take them back into the main World Group for the 2017 competition.
