Naomi Broady failed to live up to her position as fifth seed with a first-round exit at the Coupe Banque Nationale in Quebec City.
The British No 3 went down 2-6 6-4 6-4 to France's Oceane Dodin in her opening match at the WTA Tour event in Canada.
Broady appeared to be in control when she eased through the opening set for the loss of two games, but she failed to recover her rhythm after being broken in the opening game of the second set.
Dodin, ranked 132 in the world to Broady's 78, dropped 3-0 down in the decider but proceeded to break the Briton in her next two service games to lead 4-3.
She saved a break point in the 10th game but was able to hold serve and eventually progress to a second-round meeting with Sachia Vickery, who beat Patricia Maria Tig in three tie-break sets.
It was a bad Tuesday for the seeds in Quebec City, where fourth seed Julia Goerges was defeated 6-4 7-6 by Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia and Annika Beck, seeded two, crashed out 2-6 7-5 6-3 to Barbora Stefkova of the Czech Republic.
