Britain’s Kyle Edmund was forced to pull out of his first round match with David Ferrer at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna with a hip injury.

The British No 2 continued his rapid rise by breaking into the top 40 of the world rankings on Monday on the back of his first ATP Tour semi-final in Antwerp last week.

That run included one of the best wins of his career against Ferrer but Edmund's hopes of a repeat were swiftly dashed.

He lost the opening two games and after only 18 minutes, with the score at 3-2 to Ferrer, decided he could no longer continue because of what appeared to be a hip injury.

Feliciano Lopez, who won his maiden title in Vienna in 2004, defeated seventh-seeded Lucas Pouille 6-4 2-6 7-5 to set up a match against John Isner of the United States.

Viktor Troicki of Serbia converted his only break point in the final set to complete a 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 comeback win over Kevin Anderson of South Africa.
