Federer's wins at the Australian Open and Indian Wells have restored faith that he could recapture the world No 1 position, a goal that will be strengthened if he wins this week's Miami Open in the absence of Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic.

Federer told Sky Sports: "It gives you opportunities. Our ranking system is interesting, to say the least, because things can change very quickly.

Rankings are good for me because it means you don't have to face the best guys early, like I had to do in Australia and Indian Wells.

"We saw how far ahead Novak was, eight months ago. But now he's No 2 and Murray goes on a 30-match winning streak. I've been in all the positions before.

"Rankings are good for me because it means you don't have to face the best guys early, like I had to do in Australia and Indian Wells. Things will get easier.

"When you become world No 1 at this point, you can't do it without winning a Grand Slam. It's basically impossible, one without the other."
