Daniil Medvedev battles through to second round of Citi Open

Daniil Medvedev fought off a match point and an ankle injury to advance to the second round of the Citi Open in Washington D.C. on Monday.

Medvedev twisted his ankle late in the third set and fought off a match point against Reilly Opelka before he prevailed 6-7(8) 6-3 7-6(6) to move into a second-round encounter with American Steve Johnson.

American Donald Young beat compatriot Tim Smyczek 4-6 6-3 6-4, to set up a second-round meeting with world No 9 Kei Nishikori, who is trying to end an 18-month ATP title drought.

In other first round men's action, there were victories for the experienced Frenchman Nicolas Mahut against Thomas Fabbiano 6-1 7-6(3) while America's Jared Donaldson overcame Israel's Dudi Sela 6-7(6) 6-4 6-3.

Switzerland's Henri Laaksonen upset Canada's Vasek Pospisil 6-7(7) 6-4 6-3 to set up a meeting with the tournament's top seed Dominic Thiem.

The men's draw suffered a blow when John Isner, who won the Atlanta title last week and is a three-time runner-up in Washington, had to withdraw from the tournament with a knee injury.

World No 7 Thiem, will begin his campaign on Tuesday, while Argentina's former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will also take to the court.
