Alexander Zverev also reached the second round in Rotterdam as the young up and coming German took out veteran Spaniard David Ferrer 6-4 6-3.
Feliciano Lopez recorded a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) victory over 2016 champion Martin Klizan while Andreas Seppi made the most of his good fortune after slipping into the main draw as a "lucky loser".
Seppi had lost to Klizan on Sunday, but the Italian recovered from a second-set wobble against Joao Sousa to win 6-4 1-6 6-2.
At the Argentina Open, home favourite Federico Delbonis beat Germany's Florian Mayer 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 in the first round.
Brazilian qualifier Thomaz Bellucci overpowered Pedro Cachin 6-2 6-1, and Dusan Lajovic also reached the last 16 with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 win against Facundo Bagnis.
Great Britain's Liam Broady fell at the final qualifying hurdle of the New York Open as Spaniard Adrian Menendez-Maceiras won 7-5 6-3 to make the last 32.
