Marin Cilic knocked out of the Rio Open by Gael Monfils

Marin Cilic was knocked out of the Rio Open by Gael Monfils after the pair's rain-blighted second-round clash finally concluded.

The Frenchman set up a quarter-final showdown with Diego Schwartzman after beating world No 3 Cilic 6-3 7-6 (10-8).

Fourth seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas lost 7-5 6-3 to Nicolas Jarry, who will play Pablo Cuevas after the Uruguayan beat Gastao Elias 7-5 6-1.

Dominic Thiem, the second seed, progressed when opponent Pablo Andujar retired during the first set.

Fernando Verdasco, Aljaz Bedene and Fabio Fognini also went through.

World No 10 Juan Martin del Potro was knocked out of the Delray Beach Open by Frances Tiafoe.

The American wild card prevailed 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 7-5 to set up a clash with eight seed Chung Hyeon, who defeated Franko Skugor 6-4 7-6 (7-4).

"It's unbelievable, definitely," said Tiafoe, who produced 17 aces and saved 14 of 16 break points he faced against the 2009 US Open champion.

"Two weeks in a row in the quarters. I really wanted that win to make a statement. I've had a ton of tough losses against top guys. Just wanted to get over the line."

Taylor Fritz secured a 6-1 4-6 6-3 win against Mikhail Youzhny and will play Denis Shapovalov, who defeated Jared Donaldson in three sets.
