Makarova, who has previously made the quarter-final at the All England Club, further than Wozniacki has ever been, took a 5-1 lead in the third but then threw away four match points as Wozniacki battled back to 5-5.

The Russian kept her cool, however, to hold serve and then break Wozniacki, winning 6-4 1-6 7-5.

Seven-time champion Serena Williams won 6-1 6-4 in just over an hour against Viktoriya Tomova on her first return to Centre Court since winning the title in 2016.

Tomova, the 23-year-old Bulgarian, had won her first Grand Slam match in the opening round, but was no match for her opponent in the first set as she struggled to compete, but did improve dramatically in the second.

Williams, however, was rarely challenged on her own serve and is now through to a last 32 meeting with Kristina Mladenovic, who eased to a 6-2 6-2 victory against Tatjana Maria.

But the American, the runner-up at Wimbledon a year ago, then won seven games in a row.

There were also wins for Madison Keys and fifth seed Karolina Pliskova. Keys, the 10th seed, eased past Luksika Kumkhum 6-4 6-3 while the Czech Pliskova beat Victoria Azarenka 6-3 6-3 on Centre Court
