Andy Murray has decided to sit out next week's China Open due to a slight ankle injury, ending his season.

The former World No 1 will now focus on his rehabilitation ahead of the 2019 season.

Murray recently returned to competitive action, having been out since Wimbledon last year due to a hip injury.

He reached the quarter-finals in Shenzhen this week, before losing to Fernando Verdasco on Friday.

Murray had defeated David Goffin in the previous round, his best victory since returning to circuit.

However, having lost to Verdasco at the US Open in his return to Grand Slam competition, he once again fell short against the Spaniard.

Murray said: "I need to spend more time on the practice court and the gym so that I'm more robust and physically in better shape.
