Having risen to a career-high No 41 world ranking, Cameron Norrie suffered a disappointing first-round exit at the Lyon Open on Monday.

The 23-year-old enjoyed his best run in a Masters 1000 event at last month's Monte Carlo Masters, having also reached his first ATP singles final at January's Auckland Open.

However, Norrie produced a below-par display as he succumbed 6-1 6-3 to Frenchman Ugo Humbert in his opening-round tie in Lyon.

Humbert's form has suffered since reaching the semi-finals in Marseille in February and he had struggled to produce on clay so far this season, but he dominated the Briton on home soil.

The Frenchman raced into a 4-0 lead and clinched the opening set 6-1, with Norrie failing to win any of his service games in the opener.

There was a rain delay midway through the second set, but it came too late to derail Humbert's momentum.

Trailing 4-3 in the second, Norrie forced two break points but squandered the opportunity to level and Humbert closed out victory in straight sets to set up a second round showdown with third seed Denis Shapovalov.

Norrie's focus now switches to the French Open, where he'll be looking to eclipse his second-round showing at Roland Garros 12 months ago.
