Fourth seed Maria Sharapova secured her place in the third round of the inaugural Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open after seeing off fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in three sets.
The pair were meeting for the first time in three years and Kuznetsova drew first blood before Sharapova hit back to claim a 3-6 6-2 6-2 victory.
Fifth-seed Agnieszka Radwanska made a second-round exit as she was beaten in three sets by France's Caroline Garcia.
The Pole took the first set relatively comfortably but then lost two tie-breaks to go down 3-6 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (9/7).
In the first round, ninth seed Ana Ivanovic was forced to retire while trailing 7-5 6-5 against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, while number 12 seed Dominika Cibulkova also limped out against Madison Keys with the match evenly poised at one set each.
On a bad day for the seeds number 14 Lucie Safarova was on her way home after a 7-5 2-6 6-3 loss to Sabine Lisicki and Flavia Pennetta, seeded 15, also made an early exit as she lost 6-1 6-4 against Australian qualifier Jarmila Gajdosova.
There was another case of an Australian beating an Italian with Casey Dellacqua overcoming Roberta Vinci 7-5 7-5, but 11th seed Sara Errani moved through with a 7-5 6-4 victory over Heather Watson.
Tenth seed Jelana Jankovic beat Christina McHale 6-4 6-4, CoCo Vandeweghe defeated Annika Beck 6-3 6-2 and Carla Suarez Navarro was a 7-5 6-4 winner over Zhang Kailin.
Garbine Muguruza won the all-Spanish battle against Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 4-6 6-4 6-4, Swiss Timea Bacsinszky also overcame a countrywoman as she beat Stefanie Voegele 6-1 7-5 and Alize Cornet was a 6-2 6-1 winner against Romina Oprandi.
Sam Stosur departed 6-4 6-4 at the hands of Karolina Pliskova and Mona Barthel defeated China's Shuai Peng 6-2 7-6 (7/1).
