Jelena Jankovic eased into the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells when opponent Lesia Tsurenko retired from their last-eight match.

Unseeded Tsurenko was trailing 6-1 4-1 when pain in her ankle became too much for her to continue.

She suffered the injury in a fourth-round win over Canada's Eugenie Bouchard but tried to play through the pain, however it was obvious from an early stage her movement was restricted.

Jankovic had broken the Ukrainian twice in the opening set, which she won in only 22 minutes, and the one-sided pattern was similar in the second set.

After a second break, Tsurenko shook hands with Jankovic, leaving the 2010 champion to progress to a semi-final with either reigning champion Flavia Pennetta or Sabine Lisicki.

I am really sorry she got injured. She has had such a great tournament, she has beaten a lot of great players in the draw. Unfortunately she couldn't play a great match today.

"My opponent was limping so I saw that something was wrong," Jankovic said.

"I had to just focus on my game and kind of try to make as many balls as possible in the point.
