Britain's Kyle Edmund is through to the French Open first round for the first time in his career after he beat Spain's Adrian Menendez-Maceiras 6-1 6-4.

It means Edmund has made it to the main draw of consecutive grand slams after the 20-year-old qualified for the Australian Open in January, where he lost to American Steve Johnson in the opening round.

A number of the top seeds were drawn against qualifiers on Friday, but Edmund avoided all of them and will take on Frenchman Stephane Robert - a win could mean a second round clash with Nick Kyrgios, the 29th seed.

It is also the first time at Roland Garros since 2006 that Britain has had three men in the main draw, Murray being joined by Aljaz Bedene, who recently received British citizenship.

Edmund will certainly be brimming with confidence as the win over Menendez-Maceiras, who was seeded 12th in qualifying, came just 24 hours after he thrashed 2005 quarter-finalist Victor Hanescu.

Menendez-Maceiras was simply unable to cope with Edmund's energy and hard-hitting from the back of the court and the British No 4 stormed into an early 5-0 lead.

The Spaniard temporarily stemmed the tide but he could not prevent Edmund from taking the opening set and then a break in the first game of the second, after he missed a routine backhand wide.

Edmund was firmly in the ascendancy, unnerving his opponent with a number of rasping forehands, and he claimed another break to establish some breathing space.

It was needed as Menendez-Maceiras made a late fightback, recovering one break to make Edmund sweat at 5-4, but the Briton served out to seal an impressive victory in one hour and two minutes.

"I believe in myself, I'm confident that I'll be in the top 100," Edmund said.

"For me it's not a matter of if. I know I'm going to get there, it's just a matter of when.

"People progress at different stages, you can't look too far ahead because that is a dangerous road."

In women's qualifying, British No 2 Johanna Konta also made it to the first round for the first time after she beat France's Clothilde De Bernardi 6-2 6-1.

Konta made light work of her opponent, who is ranked 315th in the world, as she took a 4-0 lead in the opening set before another break early in the second set her on course for a comfortable win.

The 24-year-old was knocked out in the final qualifying round 12 months ago and last progressed to the main draw of a grand slam in 2012 at the US Open.

Konta, who will play Denisa Allertova of the Czech Republic in the opening round, said: "There's always a lot of nerves in the last round of qualification so I'm very happy to come through."
