Defending champion Madison Keys has been sent packing from the Eastbourne International, losing in straight sets to Belinda Bencic.

The No 12 seed was beaten in just 53 minutes, losing tamely 6-2 6-2 to the world No 31 from Switzerland.

The American was broken twice in each set, while managing to win just 10 points from the teenager's eight service games.

Bencic's reward will be a third round tie against last year’s Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard.

Bouchard, the world No 12, returned to winning ways with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 triumph over Alison Riske from the United States.

The 21-year-old Canadian has suffered an alarming loss of form and Tuesday’s win was just her second since mid-March.

Bouchard, seeded No 7, went into the contest on the back of six opening match defeats from her last seven tournaments.

After winning a tense first set, which could have gone either way, she pulled away in the second and secured the only break of serve in game six.

Bouchard admitted: "It's good to finally get a win. I had to try and stay with her, she was playing well.

"I tried to stay clam at the end, enjoy the moment. I've really had some ups and downs this season.

"I've learned a lot about tennis, myself and life as a result."

Second seed Caroline Wozniacki was taken to a first-set tie-break by qualifier Jarmila Gajdosova but came through to progress to the third round with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 victory.
