Andy Murray handed Great Britain an early advantage in their Davis Cup semi-final against Australia with a one-sided win against Thanasi Kokkinakis.

The first leg of the best-of-five contest saw Britain's top player delight the Glaswegian crowd in his home country by quickly dispatching his teenage opponent 6-3 6-0 6-3.

The pair have regularly practiced together in Miami but, as opponents for the first time, the gap appeared colossal between the British No 1 and the Australian No 4.

From the first set, Kokkinakis appeared to have his back against the wall as he found himself up against a supreme athlete plus thousands of his opponent's raucous countrymen in the crowd.

Murray forced break points in Kokkinakis' first two games but the young Australian held him off, although that resistance never looked likely to be maintained. The British No 1 broke to go 4-2 up as Kokkinakis feebly hit the net, and Murray took all eight points without reply in his next two service games to rip through the opening set.

The second set would be even more brutal, lasting just 23 minutes.

With Kokkinakis winded, Murray exploded through a break of service without dropping a point as they began the second set, roaring into a 3-0 lead with a second break as the Australian appeared totally overwhelmed by his surroundings.

The 19-year-old remarkably failed to win a point in the next two games, as he couldn't get near Murray's serve then watched three stunning backhands fly past him. The bagel was quickly wrapped up.

While the Australian, the world No 72, stopped the rot as he first served in the third set, he was quickly exposed as Murray overpowered him to open another break advantage.

He cruised to the finish line with his vocal fellow Scots cheering him on, breaking in the final game once again.

With Murray's win, Great Britain open a 1-0 lead against Australia in their first Davis Cup semi-final for 34 years.
