Cameron Norrie defeated by Denis Shapovalov at Los Cabos Open as losing streak continues

Cameron Norrie exited the Los Cabos Open in the early hours of Saturday morning as he was beaten by Denis Shapovalov.

The British No 2 had lost his last six competitive matches, but was showing promise in Mexico and making the semi-final.

Norrie came back to win the second set but ultimately lost 6-3 5-7 6-4 to reigning champion Shapovalov.

The 30-year-old was broken in his first service game of the match to go 2-0 down before going on to lose the first set.

The second set saw him see through his opportunities to get back in the game, levelling after his Canadian opponent had broken to love.

At 6-5 he took two set points on Shapovalov's serve, taking the second set when a forehand volley caught the line.

Shapovalov proved too strong in the end though, as he held his serve to earn a spot in the final in two hours and 40 minutes.

"Great serving from me today and I knew I needed it against a guy like Cam. He doesn't give you many free points so I knew I had to try and hit my serves and hit tricky spots for him," said Shapovalov.

"I am very happy, it was a very tough battle and I am ready to go to sleep."

The 2021 Wimbledon semi-finalist will take on Arthur Gea on Sunday.

The Frenchman beat Coleman Wong 7-6(7) 6-3, who is set to break into the ATP Top 100 for the first time on Monday.

Pegula sets up Washington Open final against Eala after Osaka beaten

Top-seeded American Jessica Pegula beat Russia's Diana Shnaider 7-5 6-4 on Saturday and set up a Washington ‌Open final against the Philippines' Alexandra Eala, who defeated Japan's Naomi Osaka 6-4 6-2.

World No 3 Pegula is seeking her third ‌title of the year and 12th of her career after winning in Dubai and Charleston. The 32-year-old ​won her first WTA title in Washington in 2019.

"I just capitalised on a couple of areas," Pegula said. "I think I started just trying ‌to find the rhythm on the return. I didn't think I was that far off ... So, just trying to pick up my energy and again, try and be a little ‌bit more aggressive."

Eala moved within one win of her first WTA title after delivering a composed performance against four-times Grand Slam champion Osaka.

The 21-year-old, playing in her third semi-final this year, reached the last four after beating second seed Elina Svitolina for her sixth win ⁠of the season over a top-10 opponent.

Eala, who made the fourth round ​at Wimbledon last month, broke Osaka in the ninth game ​of the opening set after they had been level at 4-4, then held ​to love to take the opener.

She carried that momentum into the second, breaking ⁠in the opening game and again to move 4-2 ahead before sealing victory without dropping a set during her run to the final.

"I think I played really well and, of course, it's ⁠such a meaningful match against a great player. ​So really happy to share the court with Naomi," Eala said.
