Andy Murray paid tribute to his coach Amelie Mauresmo after his victory over Novak Djokovic in the final of the Montreal Masters on Sunday.

The British No 1 broke the news in his post-match interview that his French mentor had given birth to a baby boy just hours earlier.

And asked if the 6-4 4-6 6-3 win over the world No 1 will give him satisfaction, he told Sky Sports 1: "Yes, it does. It was an extremely difficult year for me. I went through a lot and it was around this point last year when I dropped outside the top 10 in the world and there were a lot of questions asked of me.

"I have to thank my team and especially Amelie - this one is for her."

Murray won his fourth title of 2015 and lifted his record to 53-8 for the season, although admitted he had to turn in a fighting performance to finally beat Djokovic for the first time in more than two years since he won the 2013 Wimbledon final over the Serbian.

"I've had to fight extremely hard and I felt that I was pretty aggressive," the 28-year-old said. "I got myself up to the net at various times and tried to mix my game up a little bit and not give him much of a rhythm.

"I hit my crosscourt backhand well at the beginning of the match but not so well at the end. I hit my forehand approach shot well at the beginning of the match and that helped me get some cheaper points.

"The conditions were unbelievably hard today. I hadn't played any hard matches in the heat of the day this week and it was a big change, so that was tough.

Murray, who booked his place at the season-ending World Tour Finals at London's O2 admitted preparations have gone well, but is not ready to rest on his laurels ahead of the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open.

"I lost in the first round of the tournament (Washington Open) last week but things can get better very quickly, or they can get worse very quickly in sport, so it's important for me to analyse what went well this week and things I can still improve on in the next few weeks before the US Open starts.

"But I can't think it's all great and take the next couple of weeks to chill out and relax and expect the US Open to go well. I need to make sure I recover well from this and get ready for Cincinnati. I don't want to be going into the US Open with a lack of matches. Having a match like this is good physically and mentally."
