Hungarian teenager Agnes Szavay beat second seed Daniela Hantuchova 7-5 6-3 in the second round of the WTA Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven.
Szavay, 18, produced a fine display to overcome world number 10 Hantuchova in one hour and 53 minutes.
"She's got a great potential," said Hantuchova. "I was very surprised the way she played.
"I had never seen her play before. She was brave. She deserved to win."
There was better news for the third and fourth seeds - Marion Bartoli and Dinara Safina - who both made untroubled progress.
Wimbledon finalist Bartoli defeated Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-0 6-4, while Safina overcame wildcard Vania King 6-1 6-3.
Davenport makes return
Meanwhile, Lindsay Davenport returned to action just 10 weeks after giving birth to her first child by partnering Lisa Raymond to defeat in the doubles event in New Haven.
Davenport and Raymond were beaten in a champions tie-break by Cara Black and Liezel Huber.
Former world number one Davenport plans to make her singles comeback in Bali next month with a view to playing full-time in 2008.
